Engineering rises 18 positions in QS Ranking

In the QS Ranking “engineering and technology” area, the discipline of Civil and Structural Engineering stands out, which for the second consecutive year is ranked among the best 50 in the world, rising from position 37 to 32.

La Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC) rose from position 132 to 114 in the “Engineering and Technology” area, according to the last subject ranking published by the prestigious English consultant Quacquarelli Symonds (QS World University Rankings by Subject, 2020). In addition, in the discipline of Civil and Structural Engineering, PUC continued its improvement in the ranking regarding last year’s edition, rising from place number 37 to 32 globally. Thus, this discipline is one of the six PUC degrees that rank among the 50 best in the world, along with Arquitecture (36), Law (36), Education (36), Theology, divinity and Religious Studies (40), and Modern Languages (46).

Another achievement accomplished in this year’s ranking was in the Computer Science area, where PUC Engineering rose from the fourth to the third place in Latin America, as well as the Electrical engineering subject, which progressed from the third to the second place in Latin America. Regarding Chemical Engineering, it remained in the sixth place in Latin America and first in Chile.

In general, PUC ranked among the best universities in the world in 31 disciplines, grouped into five major areas, all of which PUC improved its position compared to last year. Among them, the already mentioned “Engineering and Technology” area, in addition to “Arts and humanities” in position number 51 (six positions higher than last year), “Life Sciences and medicine”, in position 174 (thirty-two places higher than 2019), “Natural Sciences” in position 129 (thirty positions higher), and “Social Sciences and Administration” in number 37 (nine places higher).

Regarding Chilean institutions, PUC is the university that has the highest number of disciplines among the best in the world (31), followed by University of Chile, with 28 areas in the ranking. The ranking included the best universities for each of these areas (it considers the 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 and 600 best institutions depending on the disciplines).  Thus, the ranking included the development of 48 different rankings, one for each of the considered disciplines. Specifically, the rankings considered for indicators: academic reputation, reputation among employers, citations for paper and H index. The weight given to each indicator depends on the specific discipline.
