The Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Engineering is Associate Professor Loreto Valenzuela, of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Bioprocesses.
Professor Loreto Valenzuela is a civil industrial engineer who completed her undergraduate and Master’s studies at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and doctoral studies at Rutgers University (USA). The research conducted by Professor Valenzuela is focused on characterizing polymeric materials, applying said materials in the food industry (e.g. films and edible coatings), biomedicine (e.g. design, manufacturing, and characterization of scaffolds), magnetic nanoparticles and nanotechnology, QSPR modelling, and the molecular dynamics of solute-solvent interactions.
During her career, Professor Valenzuela has received several awards, such as the Young Scientist Award (9th World Biomaterials Congress; 2012, Chengdu, China). Professor Valenzuela was also granted the ICX Albion Farms & Fisheries Award (“Fish 2.0: Global competition and network for sustainable seafood businesses”; 2017, Palo Alto, CA, USA), specifically for the development of FishExtend, a novel technology that extends the shelf life of fresh fish using natural ingredients, ultimately reducing production losses due to deterioration.
Professor Valenzuela is also a member of the Institute of Biological and Medical Engineering.
