UC Center for Astroengineering <\/strong><\/h4>\n

It is estimated that by 2020, Chile will host 70% of the infrastructure used for astronomical observations worldwide. This privileged position provides unique opportunities not only for research and the training of astronomers, but also for the development of technologies needed by this growing industry. As part of the UC Center for Astroengineering, our School contributes to the interdisciplinary work of physicists, astronomers, and engineers in a global effort to understand our universe.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Big Data: a universe of information<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Professor Karim Pichara, in collaboration with the Institute for Applied Computational Science of Harvard University and the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics, is working on developing new machine-learning techniques applied to astronomical data. The goal of these techniques is to automatically classify variable stars, detect quasars, and manage incomplete data from astronomical explorations. This research also contributes to training new generations of astronomers and engineers in advanced methods of astro-statistics and astro-computing.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
