Abstract

Two variations of bio-inspired, population-based optimization frameworks are proposed to op-timize damper distributions in structures subjected to earthquakes. In the first approach a pre-defined number of records are randomly selected and assigned to each individual of the popu-lation. The second approach consists of clustering individuals with similar characteristics, and each individual of each cluster is subjected to just a few randomly selected ground motions. The proposed variations are applied to an archetype building model subjected to different sets of ground motions caused by different types of earthquakes (shallow crustal and subduction). It was found that the clustering approach is much more convenient in the sense that it reduces the computational cost without significantly affecting the quality of the solution.
