Advances in data acquisition

Abstract

Positioning technologies using GPS or mobile phones are now mature enough to supplement the traditional travel diary methods on a large scale. The advantages are: less respondent burden, better accuracy and more data being captured, e.g. route choice information. The challenges of using this technology are: high cost, privacy and acceptance issues and possible sample bias. Intensive data processing is required but data sets with tracking information create new research opportunities for exploring the dynamics of travel behaviour.
