Big Data: a universe of information

Professor Karim Pichara, in collaboration with the Institute for Applied Computational Science of Harvard University and the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics, is working on developing new machine-learning techniques applied to astronomical data. The goal of these techniques is to automatically classify variable stars, detect quasars, and manage incomplete data from astronomical explorations. This research also contributes to training new generations of astronomers and engineers in advanced methods of astro-statistics and astro-computing.
