Major in Environmental Engineering

This program instills students with the ability to protect and administer natural resources (e.g. the air, water, and energy sources) through knowledge of natural systems, quantifying and designing strategies to minimize the impacts of human activities, and creating systems of sustainable infrastructure.

The Major in Environmental Engineering combines diverse specialties, including geology, ecology, physics, chemistry, hydrology, biology, and public policy, among others. Graduates will apply fundamental principles of these disciplines, together with analytical, quantitative, and experimental methodologies, to identify and develop sustainable, efficient solutions for complex environmental problems.

Recommended Exploratory Courses

  • ICH2304 Environmental Engineering
  • ICH1005 Challenges Facing Water Resources and the Environment

These courses will allow students to obtain a general vision of the Major in Environmental Engineering and the areas of knowledge that are studied.

Associated Depth Minors

  • Innovations in Water Treatment Systems
  • Hydrogeochemistry

Employment Prospects

Engineering Sciences graduates with a Major in Environmental Engineering can exercise their profession in a number of areas, such as: the mining sector; sanitary companies; centers for innovation, research, and development; the public sector; and consultancies.

Program Director

“The development and use of technologies to solve environmental problems is the heart of environmental engineering. This major will prepare you to design innovative solutions oriented towards addressing challenges related to energy, contamination, remediation, and the protection of human health and of natural and designed environmental systems,” Ignacio Vargas Cucurella.
