Biografía

My work involves cutting-edge research in geochemistry, environmental engineering, and sustainability with impact on the praxis and policy-making toward facing societal challenges in a context of transdisciplinary work. My group does field, laboratory, and modeling studies with a focus on the geochemistry and control of metal(loids) in water, attracting a continued stream of students and funding from the government and industry. Principal researcher of the Center for Sustainable Urban Development (CEDEUS), a major research center funded by ANID since 2013. Awarded ANID-Fondecyt projects, and PI of Fondef, Corfo, ANID, and ECOS projects, as well as international collaborator in NSF projects. I served in the Conicyt-Fondecyt panel for Civil Engineering and other thematic boards in water resources. Designed and implemented new courses and laboratories that have strengthened the civil & environmental engineering undergraduate, MSc, and PhD programs. I received the School of Engineering Teaching Award (2016) and “UC Teaching Excellence Award” (2017). As director of the environmental engineering program I coordinated the implementation of two majors. I was elected to represent the Engineering faculty in the Dean’s advisory collegiate committee. A member of the University Committee on Research Safety to work on institutional policies and processes. In 2017-2018 embarked on a one-year sabbatical leave and received the Eshbach fellowship at the at Northwestern University, USA. I have been appointed to participate in the accreditation and evaluation of programs in environmental engineering in Chile and abroad. Member of the Advisory Council to the Chilean minister of the environment. I have participated as reviewer of research articles, scientific proposals, and external judge for academic promotion. I have led consulting engagements for the public sector and private industry in the areas of environmental pollution, control, and sustainability.
